Tester un code QR imprimé avant de commander un lot

A QR code that scans from a large screen is not yet a verified printed sign. Printing, scaling, glare, trim and viewing distance can change the result. Test the exact exported artwork and a physical proof before ordering a batch. Check both the code’s readability and the usefulness of what happens after the scan.

Verify the payload before judging the design

Confirm the exact website address or other data encoded in the code. For a website sign, open the destination as a visitor and check the offer, mobile display and next action. Avoid testing only the business homepage when the code is meant to reach a specific service or resource.

For a Wi-Fi sign, use the intended guest network and confirm the network name, security setting and password with the responsible person. Treat the QR as a disclosure of its encoded credentials to anyone who can read it. Do not place private network credentials on public artwork or assume that hiding the password text makes the code secret.

Protect the code’s clear margin and shape

DENSO WAVE specifies a clear margin of four modules around a standard QR symbol. Keep that quiet zone free of text, borders and decorative graphics. Preserve the square shape and the module pattern; stretching, cropping or adding a logo over the code can change readability and requires fresh testing.

Use strong, simple contrast and keep the code away from a busy image. Do not choose the smallest possible code merely because it fits the design. Required print size depends on the symbol, output quality and how it will be scanned, so a universal minimum size is not a substitute for testing the actual use case.

Export and print at the intended size

Use the final file that will go to the printer, with the same layout, code and scaling. Confirm the intended physical dimensions in the print settings. If a PNG is used, check how the print application interprets its pixel dimensions rather than assuming its default size matches your design intention.

Inspect the proof for blurred modules, clipping and insufficient clear space. Check where folds, trim edges, frames or glossy reflections may interfere. If the production process differs substantially from the office proof, request an appropriate production proof or sample before committing to the full batch.

Illustrative proof failure

A fictional shop’s counter sign scans correctly from the exported image, but the print dialog shrinks it to fit a smaller card. At the actual counter distance, scanning becomes unreliable. The team revises the layout to give the code more space and repeats the physical test instead of treating the earlier screen scan as approval.

Test the real route under likely conditions

Scan the physical proof using the phones and camera behavior relevant to the intended customers. Check realistic distance, angle and lighting. This is a targeted physical-use check, not a requirement to test every browser. Record whether the code is detected and whether it opens the exact intended destination.

Follow the destination through its main action. A successful decode does not prove that a page loads properly or a form works. For a Wi-Fi code, test joining the intended guest network on a suitable device rather than assuming that decoding the text establishes connection compatibility. Recheck after any code, size, material or destination change.

Provide a fallback and retain the approved proof

Label the code with a useful reason to scan, such as viewing service details. Add a readable website address or help route so someone can continue without scanning. Keep the fallback current and consistent with the destination. A code is more useful when the reader understands the task before using it.

Save the approved export, physical size, test date and result. Make sure the printer receives that version. Inspect samples from the delivered batch and periodically check the destination while the sign remains in use. If a redirect or hosting service is involved, keep responsibility for its maintenance explicit.

  • Exact payload and destination verified.
  • Four-module clear margin preserved.
  • Final physical size and print quality checked.
  • Realistic scan and destination action tested.
  • Readable fallback and maintenance owner included.

Votre prochaine étape

Export a sign from the Branded QR Print Kit, print one proof at the intended size and complete the checklist. Approve the batch only after the physical scan and customer route both work.
